A man’s place is in the kitchen…

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

…That’s why it’s full of mess and gadgets!

So says an article in today’s ‘Lifestyle’ supplement in the Yorkshire Post – we thought we HAD to blog about this!

‘According to a new survey, 1 in 10 men believe their place is in the kitchen, as they increasingly take charge of the cooking – and the dinner parties.’

New lifestyle app Great British Chefs (check it out – it’s AWESOME!) conducted the research and found:

• 70% of men AND women said they enjoy cooking (equal)
• 1/3 men admit to kicking their partner out the kitchen when cooking a meal (probably they don’t want them to see their mess?)
• 1 in 10 men state that the kitchen is now the room they spend the most of their spare time in (because that’s where all the food is?)
• 50% of men admitted that they offer to host dinner parties and gatherings because it gives them a chance to use their fancy kitchen gadgets (showing off)
• 1 in 10 men spend over £500 a year on cooking gadgets (Londoners are likely to splash the most cash on their kitchens – 18% spend up to £1,000 a year – ouch!)
• 74% of men own a hand-blender or milk frother (but do they actually USE them?)

So, as a male or female, what are your thoughts? Here in the studentcooking.tv office we sort of agree this is becoming the case: the lads are (mostly!) keen cooks, fancying themselves as Jamie Olivers, and think they can cook a better meal than their girlfriends…

…While the girls, as much as they enjoy cooking, feel their other halves sometimes dominate the kitchen and get all bossy – not that we complain though! As long as they do the washing up afterwards ;)

What would your ‘last supper’ be?

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

‘Every prisoner waiting to be executed is granted a last meal…’ What would yours be?

This is not a question the average person thinks about – mainly because this is not an average situation.

However surely you’ve thought about, or been asked what would your last meal be if you knew it’d be your last. We know it’s not the nicest thing to think about, but this very intriguing website/project – ‘Last Meals Project’ – caught our eye…

So, check this out for some interesting reading (from criminal minds), and think about what YOUR ‘last meal’ would be.

We asked our lot and here’s what they said…

How to make a sausage – like a pro!

Monday, September 26th, 2011

Some of the studentcooking.tv crew have been travelling round uni Freshers’ Fairs in the past week – and have more to come this week! It’s been very fun…

…And educational! While we were at Oxford Brookes’ Fair, Executive Chef Andrew Walker was celebrating the good old pig: showing students how to use ALL of the animal apart from the oink for cooking and eating.

We went along to see Andrew giving demonstrations of the various cuts of meat from the different parts of the pig – head, cheeks, ears, feet – and got us all to try it. It might sound a bit gruesome but it was tasty and is really cheap to get, too!

Plus, Rob (one of our Account Managers) got stuck in and was shown how to make a sausage – watch the video for an educational laugh!

The ‘Happy Food’ list!

Saturday, September 17th, 2011

What food would you say makes you happy? Chocolate? Beer? Cakes?

Well, according to the Happy Food Index (complied by Sainsbury’s Live Well for Less), they’ve been beaten by a certain vegetable that brings tears to your eyes and make your breath smell…yep, totally random and unexpected – onions!!

Foods were rated by shoppers using 9 categories:
• Moreish
• Yummy
• Healthy
• Fashionable
• Comforting
• Looks
• Taste
• Smell
• Expense

Find it hard to believe that onions came top? See what other (and probably more obvious) foods it beat…

We just came across this while having a random browse on t’internet and thought…

…OOOOOOOOPS!

Just a slight kitchen error!!

Make sure you don’t do the same thing (or at least not quite as drastic). If you watch some of our videos about cooking and kitchen tips, this shouldn’t happen!!

This random, colourful and humorous book brings together a bizarre collection of products from all over the world.

All are genuine, but you would question it.

Read it, explore it, buy it – even if it’s just for the pictures and the laughs.

Alex and Liam do Walmart

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

We came across this YouTube video and thought it was amusing enough to share with you.

Alex and Liam, as you will see, are astounded at the American superstore that is Walmart – and are amazed that you can buy everything under one roof (not like our Tesco and Asda then, eh?).

Have a watch of it yourselves for some food/supermarket-related entertainment!

Microwaves are happy things!

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

Look – it’s a happy microwave!

We spotted this. It made us smile.

So clearly microwaves, used for cooking and heating up a number of food-related things, are your friend in the kitchen :)

Have YOU got a happy microwave? Give it a go.

(Note: studentcooking.tv cannot be held responsible for broken microwaves or any accidents involved in turning it on its side. It’s just a bit of random fun.)
