Tom’s Freegan Opinion

In honesty before I’d done the film I had never heard of Freegans. I remember when I first spoke to the studentcooking team about it I was kind of a bit freaked out and not sure what to expect at all. I’m always up for finding out though so I thought why not.

I have to say the experience was very strange. The feeling of mild dis-comfort mixed with the excitement of one the fact we shouldn’t really be going through this stuff and secondly not knowing what we might find. It was a real eye opener. When we got to the second skip I was shocked to see how much stuff was thrown away that I wouldn’t have chucked had it being in my fridge.

I don’t know why I didn’t expect to see so much especially knowing that there a re a load of people just like Mina who are able to live their lives like this. It was quite refreshing to meet someone like Mina who really believes in what they’re doing. I have a lot of respect for her doing it as it’s not something that I could do. I like having the security of knowing what I’m going to eat and living as a Freegan would not give me that.

I’m a far way off from becoming a Freegan and to be honest I don’t think I ever will be. Seeing this side of things has made me think about waste a lot more though and I would like to think I’ll be more conscientious about what I throw away now.
